What is Powder Coating?
Powder coating is a tough, durable, and attractive way to finish metal parts — it’s often used instead of traditional paint.
Instead of using liquid paint with solvents, powder coating uses a dry powder made from polyester, epoxy, or similar materials. The powder is electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the metal surface. Then, the part is baked in an oven, causing the powder to melt and fuse into a smooth, hard finish.
Key Benefits of Powder Coating
Durability: Highly resistant to chips, scratches, chemicals, and UV damage
Appearance: Smooth, even finish available in a huge range of colours and textures
Environmentally friendly: No solvents, minimal waste, and no harmful VOCs
Long-lasting: Outperforms regular paint in most applications
It’s commonly used for:
Car parts (wheels, brackets, chassis, etc.)
Industrial equipment
Outdoor furniture
Bike frames
Fencing and signage
What Materials Can Be Powder Coated?
Powder coating works best on metals — because the powder needs to be electrostatically charged and then baked onto the surface at high temperatures. The most commonly powder-coated materials include:
Metals:
Mild Steel
Stainless Steel
Aluminium
Galvanised Steel
Cast Iron
These materials are perfect because they conduct electricity and can withstand the heat of the curing oven.
What Can’t Be Powder Coated Easily?
Plastic, rubber, or wood – These don’t conduct electricity and can melt or burn in the curing oven.
Some alloys or thin materials – If the metal is very thin or contains additives, it may warp under heat or not hold the powder properly.
Items with contamination – Rust, oil, or silicone residue will affect adhesion unless properly cleaned and prepped.
